Entrepreneurship development is a cornerstone objective for the formation and growth of small businesses. It represents a vital area in promoting economic development at the community level, and the strength of many past successes should be honoured, encouraged and promoted.

Providing assistance to entrepreneurs for the purpose of promoting success requires a sequence of steps:

  • Developing a life-long commitment to learning
  • Teaching the general principles of entrepreneurship
  • Building networking skills
  • Facilitating access to resources

Broadly defined as the creation of ventures of all kinds, entrepreneurship contributes to the comprehensive development of a community. Social and commercial ventures, independent entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial employees and volunteers all contribute to the advancement of a community's capabilities and to the development of new opportunities.

Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation

GPA EDC

The Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPA EDC) is a regional
economic development organization contracted to provide a variety of economic development services for the City and County of Peterborough, Ontario. Formed in 1998, the GPA EDC operates as a non-profit corporation without share capital governed by a Board of Directors under the Corporations Act of Ontario.

GPA EDC activities focus on four business pillars:

  • Manufacturing and Small Business
  • Innovation
  • Tourism
  • Agriculture and Rural

Community Futures Development Corporation
CFDC

The Peterborough Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) is a provincially incorporated, federally funded lending agency whose mandate includes:

  • Social Economy

The Peterborough CFDC has been helping small business in the City and County of Peterborough since September, 1985.

Employment Planning & Counselling-Peterborough

Employment Planning & Counselling-Peterborough is a not-for-profit,
charitable organization that aims to provide superior career development
and employment related programs and services.  

Formerly known as the Employment Planning & Youth Career Centre,

Peterborough Resource Employment Centre

The Peterborough Employment Resource Centre is a self-help centre which provides current resource materials, equipment and professional assistance from qualified staff to individuals conducting a self-directed job search. All of these services are provided at no cost to any member of the community and surrounding area.

Opportunity Centre


The Opportunity Centre was originally established in the small rural community of Burleigh Falls in 1985. The Centre is now the primary delivery agency offering youth and adult employment services through the Job Connect Program to Lakefield, Young's Point, Burleigh Falls, Woodview, Apsley, Buckhorn, Warsaw, Douro, Curve Lake, Bridgenorth and Ennismore. 

The Opportunity Centre offers a variety of services, including the provision of information on employment, skilled trades and labour market information; planning and placement services; and summer jobs for youth.

The Canadian Youth Business Foundation

The Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) is a national charity dedicated to growing our nation's economy one young entrepreneur at a time. We look at character not collateral, when providing youth, age 18-34, with pre-launch coaching, business resources, start-up financing and mentoring, to help them launch and sustain a successful business.
